House Design Set, Fundraising Underway

The House Corporation Board has announced progress towards the establishment of a Chapter House for Lambda Chi Alpha at KU!  BRP Architects, a professional architectural firm in Springfield, Missouri, has submitted a revised house design for the project.  These plans, which were prepared with input from alumni and active brothers, served as the basis for construction estimates.  Brother Jason Swan (ZI 719) generously offered to cover the cost of the design effort and we thank him for this support!  We are pleased to share images and floorplans for the new house.

The house will be built on the House Corporation lot at 1510 Sigma Nu Place, which sits at the top of a hill with the front facing south.  This lot is owned free and clear thanks to the support of several early contributing brothers.  The new house will allow for 40 in-house residents and common areas for twice as many.  Future expansion plans include room for an additional 30 actives.  A major fundraising drive will be launched as we celebrate our 75th anniversary at KU.

As of August 2024, over $1,473,000 in pledges and contributions have been made towards the overall Chapter House Project.  Of that $340,000 was used to eliminate the debt related to the land where the house will be built, and the House Corporation remains debt-free.  With an anticipated construction budget of about $5 million, the combined contributions and sustaining member support goal has been set at $3 million.  That will leave about half of the overall project to be financed.  The active chapter will service the debt through house payments that will be comparable to other housing on campus.

Educational Foundation Accepting Tax-Deductible Contributions

The Zeta Iota Zeta Educational Foundation, a 501(c)(3) charitable organization, has committed up to $2.5 million in funds for the educational areas within the proposed Chapter House.  This amount is determined based upon the percent of square footage in the house that is used for studying, etc.  Guidance provided by legal counsel has confirmed that tax-deductible contributions can be granted to the House Corporation for these specific purposes.  In addition, a portion of  ongoing expenses related to the house, such as property taxes, utilities, etc., can be supported by the Foundation.  We will also support the costs of operating and maintaining these areas through sustaining grants.

The Educational Foundation also grants over $7000 in scholarships to actives annually from the William Bradford Shierk Memorial Fund and Jim Fleming Scholarship Fund.  This includes tuition support based upon financial need, as well as awards for GPA achievement, combined with community service.

The Foundation accepts donations for scholarships and the Chapter House Project, including contributions of appreciated assets, such as stocks, land, etc.  Under IRS regulations, gifts of such assets do not result in a taxable gain, yet the entire value of the asset is considered a tax-deductible contribution. And, of course, cash contributions are always appreciated.  For those not seeking tax-deductible benefits, donations can be sent directly to the House Corporation.
